Advertising Choices
Which media delivers the best advertising ROI?
All businesses, large and small, have a limited advertising budget. It could be millions or hundreds of dollars, but all budgets are finite. Regardless of the amount of your monthly spend, the decision of where to place those dollars and which ad campaign will give the best ROI presents a challenge. Television, radio, online (PPC), outdoor media, the Yellow Pages or print… how can you know unless you try them all?
Television commercials?
Cable TV advertising is a shell game that is played on both sides of the field… at the same time. If you’re an advertiser the cable company will brag about their tremendous reach and how many homes will ”see your ad”. However, the pitch they make to subscribers is that by using their ‘free’ DVR, people can fast-forward and skip all commercials. Does this sound like a good option to you?
Radio?
Another shotgun advertising approach that would require buying spots on a multitude of stations to reach all demographics. Besides being expensive, radio often reaches people when they are not in a position to take immediate action (at work or in their cars).
Outdoor media (billboards)?
A nice supplement to a big-budget branding campaign, exorbitantly expensive and like radio, billboards reach people at a time when they are not in a position to take action. If you want to sell something RIGHT NOW, the only way to reach your market is at the time they are searching for your product or service. Can you say… ‘Google it?’
Yellow Pages?
The publisher of the Yellow Pages, R.H. Donnelley, filed for bankruptcy this month (6/09). Theirs is a dying business with shrinking revenues because people now use the Internet or GPS enabled cell phones to find local businesses. Most people couldn’t even tell you where they keep their phone book!
Print (newspapers & magazines)?
Century-old newspapers and scores of popular magazines have closed their doors just in the past year alone. Why? Plummeting ad revenues because subscriptions are declining and people use the Internet to learn about products and find local companies from which to buy those products. Additionally, have you ever priced a four-color ad in any magazine or newspaper? Ouch! MAYBE a prospective buyer will see your ad once - turn the page - and forget it.
Internet

Internet advertising is the ONLY way to reach people who are searching for YOUR product or service NOW. Conventional advertising is little more than (very expensive) brand building. Unless you can cover your local market with billboards, run an ongoing radio & TV blitz, place full-color ads in the newspaper and magazines and maintain a large ad in the Yellow Pages, you will not create effective awareness for your company.
In the age of the Internet and laser-like geo-targeted advertising… why would any business invest in old, dying methods of promotion when they can put their ad in front of that one person who is looking for them right NOW?
